The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act was signed in January 2014.

“Lead free” will be redefined as “not more than a weighted average of 0.25% lead when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures.”

What “Lead Free” Really Means

Although “lead free” still doesn’t mean completely free of lead, 0.25% (0.2% with respect to solder and flux) it is far from the previously allowed 8.0%. Currently this year, it is illegal to sell or install products that do not adhere to the new requirement.

Wetted parts including meters, expansion tanks, backflow preventers, flexible connectors, strainers, and assorted gauges, fittings, valves, etc.— any product used to port water for human consumption. Non-potable plumbing fixtures: outdoor watering or toilets are exempt.

It has been taken out of gasoline, removed from paint, and banned from children’s toys.

The existing infrastructure dose not require existing fixtures to be replaced. However, if the EPA has found it to be unsafe for paint, unsafe for gasoline, and banned from children’s toys, do you want to ingest it? Lead has emerged as the most dangerous neurotoxin known to man, potentially damaging the developing brain and nervous system, causing life-long learning disabilities and other serious problems. If a noncompliant plumbing fixture is taken out of service for any reason, such as repair or testing, it must be replaced.
